1877 - 1880 Ordnance Survey Map - Swansea Town - Division Sheet XXIV.5.2. First Edition - Dyfatty, Greenhill, North Hill.
A large-format zincographed town plan of Swansea, Wales, published by the Ordnance Survey Office, Southampton, in 1880. This first edition sheet, identified as Glamorgan (Gower) Swansea Sheet XXIV.5.2, is based on a survey conducted in 1877. The map is printed in black ink on a single sheet of paper, which has been mounted onto a brown buckram cloth border for reinforcement. The plan depicts the West Ward and the Western or Gower Division with exceptional detail at a scale of 1:500.
Notable geographical features included in this urban and industrial section are Penrhyn House, the Cattle Market, St. Mary's Graveyard, and several industrial sites such as quarries and gravel pits. Public houses are specifically identified, including the Black Horse, Golden Lion, and Rising Sun. The layout of Greyhound Street, Croft Street, and Watkins Street is clearly delineated, showing individual building footprints and garden plots. The bottom margin contains detailed notes on altitudes relative to the mean sea level at Liverpool and a scale bar in links and feet. The bottom left corner features a handwritten red number 24 and printed text reading Surveyed in 1877 / Reprint 25/99. A price of 2/6 is printed in the lower right corner.
More Information
The map shows evidence of heavy foxing and brown spotting across the entire paper surface (photo 1). Several ripples and creases are visible throughout the sheet, particularly in the upper right quadrant (photo 7). A significant dark circular stain, possibly water or oil-based, is present on the bottom left margin near the edge of the map detail (photo 5). The edges of the paper show minor wear and small nicks, and the cloth backing exhibits light fraying at the corners (photo 1). The printed details remain clear and legible despite the surface discolouration.
