1877 - 1880 Ordnance Survey Map - Swansea Town - Glamorganshire Sheet XXIV. 5. 16. - Terrace Road, Cromwell Street.

Ordnance Survey, Sheet XXIV. 5. 16. West Ward Swansea. This is a large-scale Victorian town plan map of the West Ward in Swansea, Glamorganshire, Wales. The sheet is zincographed and was published at the Ordnance Survey Office, Southampton, in 1880. The lower left margin states it was surveyed in 1878 and re-zincographed and printed in 1886. The map is executed at a scale of 1:500 (10.56 feet to one statute mile) and features hand-coloured pink and blue outlines to buildings and boundaries. The plan is printed on paper and mounted onto a linen backing with a dark brown buckram border.

The map provides an extremely high level of detail, including individual house plans, garden layouts, and industrial sites. Streets identified include Norfolk Street, Rhondda Street, Cromwell Street, St. George's Street, Underhill Street, and Calvert Terrace. Notable landmarks shown include Heathfield House with its landscaped grounds, Heathfield Timber Yard containing a saw mill and workshops, Heathfield Quarry, and Mount Pleasant Quarry. Technical details such as air shafts, lamp posts (L.P.), fire plugs (F.P.), and bench marks (B.M.) with specific elevations are clearly marked. A large red handwritten number 4 is present in the bottom left corner.

More Information

The map shows significant signs of age and handling. There is widespread foxing and brown toning across the paper surface (photo 1). Several areas of water staining are visible, particularly along the lower margin and the left-hand side (photo 2). Multiple creases and surface undulations are present throughout, consistent with the item having been stored rolled or used as a working document (photo 6). The edges of the linen and buckram mounting show visible wear, fraying, and minor losses (photo 1). The two heavy brass weights shown in the photographs are for display only and are not included in the lot.
