1877 - 1880 Ordnance Survey Map - Swansea Town - Glamorganshire Sheet XXIV.5.17, First Edition - Oxford Street, Market, St. Mary's.
A first edition Ordnance Survey street plan of Swansea, Glamorgan, focused on the town centre. The map was zincographed and published at the Ordnance Survey Office, Southampton, in 1880, based on a survey conducted in 1877. This specific sheet is identified as Glamorgan (Gower) Swansea Sheet XXIV.5.17 and includes a reprint date of 30/1900. The plan is printed in monochrome and is laid down on a dark brown linen backing for reinforcement.
The map provides an exceptionally high level of urban detail, showing the footprints of individual buildings, yards, and gardens. Significant landmarks and institutions are clearly labelled, including the New Market, St. Mary's Church and Vicarage, the Swansea & South Wales Institution for the Blind, Trinity Chapel, and the Waterloo Foundry (Iron). It also identifies various industrial sites such as breweries, a coach factory, and a female training college, alongside numerous public houses marked P.H. Technical data included at the foot of the sheet details altitudes given in feet above the assumed mean level of the sea at Liverpool, with specific bench marks (B.M.) and surface levels recorded across the site. A linear scale is provided at the bottom right. A large handwritten numeral 8 in red crayon is located in the bottom left corner.
More Information
The map is in a heavily used and aged condition consistent with a working document. There is significant and widespread foxing, heavy toning, and surface soiling throughout the paper surface (photo 1). Several distinct turquoise or green ink splashes are present near the bottom left margin at Singleton Street (photo 9, 10). There are visible creases, including a prominent horizontal fold across the centre (photo 1). The edges of the paper are frayed with some loss, particularly at the bottom margin where the underlying linen backing is exposed and frayed (photo 2). A small tear is visible at the bottom centre edge (photo 2). Despite these aesthetic issues, the map remain entirely legible.
