Ordnance Survey. Sheet XXIV.5.9. Swansea. Published at the Ordnance Survey Office, Southampton, 1880. This is a large-scale zincographed town plan of a portion of Swansea, Wales, surveyed in 1878 and transcribed as Re-zincographed and printed in 1885. The plan covers the East Ward of Swansea, specifically detailing the Pentre-Guinea and Mackworth areas at a scale of 1:500 (10.56 Feet to One Statute Mile). The cartography provides exceptional detail of the Victorian industrial landscape, including the Midland Railway (Swansea Vale Section) with its engine sheds, turntables, and tracks. Notable landmarks identified include Warlich's Works (Patent Fuel), Mackworth Villas, Maesteg House, Bryn-tawe, and Kilvey Cottage. Marginalia includes the sheet numbers XXIV.5.4, XXIV.5.9, and XXIV.5.14, alongside parish references for Llansamlet and St Thomas. A handwritten red number 21 is present in the lower-left corner.
More Information
The map shows significant signs of age and historical use. There is widespread heavy foxing and toning across the entire paper surface (photo 1). Multiple dark brown damp or iron gall ink stains are visible, particularly along the lower margin and near the scale bar (photos 8 and 10). The paper edges are frayed in places and are beginning to lift from the linen backing at the lower right corner (photo 4). The linen backing exhibits vertical creasing and minor fraying at the borders (photo 1).
