1877 - 1887 Ordnance Survey Map - Swansea Town - Glamorganshire Sheet XXIII.8.15 & 20 - Mansion House, Ffynone, Brooklands.
Ordnance Survey, Glamorganshire Sheet XXIII.8.15, Swansea (Gower). Zincographed and Published at the Ordnance Survey Office, Southampton, 1879. This example is a large-format 1:500 scale town plan, surveyed in 1878 and re-zincographed and printed in 1887. The map is printed on paper segments mounted onto a brown linen cloth backing for durability.
The sheet provides an exceptionally detailed plan of the Uplands and Ffynone area of Swansea. It includes original outline coloring in pink highlighting residential terraces such as Glan-m-aen Terrace, Rosehill Terrace, Montpellier Terrace, Brooklands Terrace, and Woodlands Terrace. Major estates and villas are clearly identified, including Ffynnonau, Brooklands, Rheanva, Springfield, Ida Villa, Pen-maen Villas, Devonshire Villa, and Burnham House. The plan features minute topographical details including garden layouts, a croquet ground, fountains, lodges, tanks, air shafts, and an old quarry.
The margins contain full publication details, a scale bar, and technical notes regarding the survey dates. Handwritten pencil annotations are present in the upper right quadrant, and further ink marks appear near a road junction. A large red numeral 5 is located in the bottom left corner.
More Information
The map exhibits significant signs of age and handling (photo 1). Widespread foxing and overall toning are visible across the paper surface, particularly in the central and lower regions (photo 9). There are noticeable water stains and surface dirt, especially along the lower margin (photo 2). Creasing and light fraying are present at the edges of the linen backing (photo 13). The pink coloring remains relatively vibrant, though there is some minor bleeding. The brass weights shown in the photographs are for display purposes only and are not included in the lot.
