1877 - 1891 Ordnance Survey Map - Swansea Town - Glamorganshire Sheet XXIII.8.25 - Uplands, St. James, Brynymor Road.

A large-scale Ordnance Survey town plan of the St. Helens and West Ward areas of Swansea, Wales, printed in monochrome as a zincograph. The map is based on a survey conducted in 1877 and was published at the Ordnance Survey Office, Southampton, in 1879; this specific sheet is a re-zincographed edition printed in 1891. The plan is presented at a scale of 1:500, offering exceptional architectural detail of the late Victorian urban landscape.

The sheet features the prominent St. James's Church at its centre, noted with a capacity for 950 seats, surrounded by St. James's Crescent. The surrounding residential streets are named and depicted with individual plot boundaries, garden layouts, and internal features including air shafts and a Pillar Letter Box. Named properties include Granville Villas, Devon Terrace, Belgrave Terrace, and Richmond Villas. Further landmarks such as a Baptist Chapel, Malthouse, and Vicarage are clearly identified. The top right margin reads GLAMORGANSHIRE (Gower) SWANSEA SHEET XXIII. 8. 25. The lower margin contains the imprint Zincographed and Published at the Ordnance Survey Office, Southampton, 1879 and indicates the price as 2/6. The lower left corner is marked SOUTH WARD Surveyed in 1877 Re-zincographed and printed in 1891. The map is mounted upon a dark brown paper or card backing.

More Information

The map exhibits heavy foxing and brown spotting across the central and upper-left sections (photo 1). The paper shows significant toning and surface grubbiness consistent with its age. There are several small tears and fraying along the edges, most notably at the bottom left corner (photo 4). Visible creases are present where the map appears to have been previously folded or rolled (photo 11). The sheet has been trimmed to the border and adhered to a secondary brown backing, with some lifting and wear to the mounting at the corners.
