1877 - 1891 Ordnance Survey Map - Swansea Town - Glamorganshire Sheet XXIII.12.5. - Brangwyn Hall site, Sandfields (west), Victoria Park.

Ordnance Survey, Glamorganshire. Swansea. Sheet XXIII.12.5. (Gower). Zincographed and Published at the Ordnance Survey Office, Southampton, 1879. This large-scale town plan is a monochrome zincograph on paper, mounted onto a brown cloth backing. The sheet is marked as surveyed in 1877 and re-zincographed and printed in 1891. The map depicts a detailed portion of Swansea bordering the Bristol Channel and Swansea Bay, featuring St. Helen's Works (Iron Foundry), a timber yard, the Cremorne Hotel, and various recreational facilities including skittle alleys and a skating rink. Infrastructure such as the Oystermouth Tramway and the L. & N.W.R. Swansea Branch railway are clearly delineated alongside residential streets such as St. Helen's Avenue and Rodney Street. The bottom margin includes technical notes regarding altitudes and bench marks, and the lower-left corner features a large red hand-stamped numeral 16.

Scale: 1/500 being 10.56 Feet to One Statute Mile or 41.66 Feet to One Inch.

More Information

The map exhibits significant cockling and rippling across the entire paper surface, most prominent in the central and upper sections (photo 1). Scattered foxing and brown spotting are evident throughout, notably around the St. Helen's Works area (photo 3). There is general toning and discolouration consistent with age, with damp-induced tidemarks and staining visible along the upper border (photo 4) and left margin. A few small dark stains are present in the lower margin near the scale (photo 6). The cloth backing shows some fraying at the extreme edges but remains structurally intact.
