1877 - 1892 Ordnance Survey Map - Swansea Town - Glamorganshire Sheet XXIV.1.17. - Green Hill, Waun Wen, St. Josephs.

This lot features a large-scale Ordnance Survey map of Swansea, South Wales, which has been zincographed and printed. The header reads GLAMORGANSHIRE (Gower) SWANSEA SHEET XXIV.1.17. / SWANSEA DISTRICT DIVISION. The imprint at the lower center margin states the map was Surveyed and Published at the Ordnance Survey Office, Southampton, 1879, with a further note at the lower left indicating it was Surveyed in 1876 & 1877 and Rezincographed and printed in 1892.

Executed at a scale of 1/500 (10.56 feet to one statute mile), the plan provides minute architectural detail of the Swansea Town and District Divisions, specifically parts of the North and West Wards. Densely packed terrace housing is shown along Rock Street, Marsden Street, Lamb Street, Lion Street, Brynmelyn Street, and Llangyfelach Street. Institutional and industrial landmarks are identified, including a large School for Boys, Girls & Infants, the Cwm-felin Works, a Tramway, and a Quarry. The course of the Burlais Brook is depicted with hachures. Precise technical data is recorded throughout, including manholes (M.H.), air shafts, and benchmark elevations (B.M.) referenced to the mean water level at Liverpool. The monochrome print is backed onto a brown linen or canvas support for structural reinforcement. A large number 2 is written in red crayon at the bottom left corner.

More Information

The map is in fair to good condition, showing signs of age and historical use. Significant foxing and small brown spotting are visible across the entire paper surface (photo 1). Several dark liquid stains are present at the bottom center margin, partially obscuring the scale bar (photo 3). The edges of the linen backing show fraying and wear (photo 1). The paper surface exhibits undulations and creasing consistent with having been stored in a roll (photo 2).
