1877 - 1893 Ordnance Survey Map - Swansea Town - Division Sheet Sheet XXIV. 5. 7. - Dyfatty / North Hill / Orchard Street

A large-scale Ordnance Survey town plan map of a portion of Swansea, Glamorganshire, originally surveyed in 1877 and re-zincographed and printed in 1893. The uncoloured sheet is printed in black ink on paper and has been sections-mounted onto a heavy brown linen backing for durability. The map features the 'WEST WARD' and 'SWANSEA TOWN DIVISION' and provides an extremely high level of urban detail.

Notable landmarks depicted include Bishop Gore's Grammar School with internal room layouts for the library and classrooms, the slaughter houses, Smithfield Inn, The Lyceum public house, and Bellevue. Industrial features such as a saw mill, brewery, and timber yards are shown alongside residential areas like Fuller’s Row and Clifton Row. The topography includes Gibbet Hill and an old gravel pit.

The header reads: 'GLAMORGANSHIRE. SWANSEA SHEET XXIV. 5. 7. St. Mary’s Grave Yard'. The bottom margin carries the imprint: 'Zincographed and Published at the Ordnance Survey Office, Southampton, 1880. All rights of reproduction reserved.' and 'Surveyed in 1877. Re-zincographed & printed in 1893.' Further marginalia includes 'SWANSEA TOWN & FRANCHISE Ph. XXIV, 5, 2.' and a handwritten red number '23' to the lower left corner.

More Information

The map is in fair to good condition, showing signs of significant age and use. There is heavy foxing and moisture staining (tide marks) prominent along the bottom edge (photos 1, 4, 13) and scattered throughout the body of the map. The paper has toned to a yellowed hue with surface dirt and grubbiness visible across various sections (photos 8, 9, 10). A large handwritten number '23' in red crayon is present in the bottom left corner (photo 5). The linen backing shows minor fraying at the edges.
