1877 - 1895 Ordnance Survey Map - Swansea Town - Glamorganshire Sheet XXIV.5.13. - High Street, Strand, North Dock, River Tawe.

An Ordnance Survey town plan for a portion of Swansea, Glamorganshire, focused on the industrial docklands. This large-scale map is a zincographed monochrome print on paper, backed with linen for durability and bound at the edges with dark brown cloth tape. The sheet identifies the North Dock, Beaufort Dock, and the New Cut of the River Tawe in exceptional detail.

The cartographic content highlights Victorian industrial infrastructure including the Great Western Railway North Dock Branch and siding tracks, the Albion Dry Dock, various mineral sheds, timber yards, and the Castle Foundry. Notable social and commercial landmarks are recorded, such as the Cuba Hotel, Fishguard Arms, Cardiff Arms, Bush Hotel, and a Working Men's Club & Institute. The bottom margin includes a scale of 10.56 feet to one statute mile and technical notes regarding altitudes and rights of way. The imprint at the bottom center reads Zincographed and Published at the Ordnance Survey Office, Southampton. The bottom left margin notes the map was surveyed in 1877, published in 1879, and re-printed in 1895.

More Information

The map shows significant age-related wear consistent with industrial or office use. There is widespread heavy foxing and browning across the entire sheet (photo 1). Three prominent dark circular stains are located within the mineral yards section on the right-hand side (photo 5). Visible horizontal and vertical fold creases are present throughout, along with surface rippling (photo 2). The bottom edge displays minor fraying and a small closed tear near the publication data (photo 3). The linen backing and cloth binding remain intact at the edges.
