1878 $3 MS65 PCGS. When collectors think of type coins in the three dollar gold series, the 1878 is usually the top consideration. The mintage of 82,324 pieces is not the highest in the series -- that honor goes to the 1854 (138,618 pieces) -- but the date is the most plentiful in Mint State. This is due to the fact that when the 1854 was issued, the denomination circulated to a reasonable extent, and no initial numismatic attention was paid to the coins. Whereas when the 1878 was produced, three dollar gold pieces seldom circulated, and ample quantities ended up in numismatic channels. This is a delightful Gem example of the later issue. Shimmering yellow-gold luster adorns pristine fields, and even Liberty's portrait is well preserved. Only a touch of the usual strike softness on the wreath bowknot is noted.
