1879 “My Country, tis of Thee” 1ed America, Our National Hymn Smith Patriotism

“America. Our National Hymn.” is a folio dedicated to the renowned patriotic song, “My Country, tis of Thee,” also known as “America,” by Rev. Samuel Francis Smith. Smith, a Baptist minister, journalist, and author, is celebrated for this anthem which became an emblem of American patriotism. The book showcases a frontispiece engraving, a comprehensive three-page biographical outline of Smiths life, the original lyrics of “America,” and 11 additional evocative woodcut illustrations inspired by the hymns verses, each accompanied by relevant captions. The hymn was first sung in public during a childrens Independence Day gathering at Bostons Park Street Church in 1831 and was later published in 1832 by Lowell Mason in “The Choir.”
