1880 BIBLE Gallery Gustave Dore ART Illustrated Old New
1880 BIBLE Gallery Gustave Dore ART Illustrated Old New Testament Bible Scenes
Gustave Dore first began publishing Bible illustrations in 1865 in France, but because of their immense popularity, they would see reissues for decades and all over the western world. Most of these large, multi-volume Bibles, that contained nearly 250 engravings, were too heavy and expensive for the common buyer, so smaller products were published that featured only illustrations and no Bible text. These became the Dore Bible Gallery editions.
Dores Bible illustrations had a direct effect on early 20th-century biblical based films, drawing influence and costume design from Dores portrayal of Bible characters. This late 19th-century Altemus edition features a frontispiece portrait of DoreÌ.
