Major-General Forlong was a military engineer and scholar of world religions. Forlong’s ‘Rivers of Life’ is a two-volume comprehensive, cross-cultural study of world religions. Forlong traces the development of the world’s great faiths including worship of trees, serpents, ancestors and heavenly bodies, along with comparisons of Egyptian pyramids and earthen mounds in Kentucky, Vishnu Christian catacomb symbols, the Assyrian and British Crown; Roman sun worship and the doctrine of Roman Catholic transubstantiation, Celtic water worship and Cibola tribes from New Mexico.

This 1883 first edition is illustrated with two color folding maps, over 300 in-text illustrations, a large, folding, "synoptical table of gods, god-ideas and many features which all faiths have more or less in common"!
