1885 Our Hero General US Grant Civil War Pollard Illustrated Battle Children’s
“The art of war is simple enough. Find out where your enemy is. Get at him as soon as you can. Strike him as hard as you can and keep moving on.”
– Ulysses S. Grant
Edwin Austin Forbes was an American landscape painter and etcher who first gained fame during the American Civil War for his detailed and dramatic sketches of military subjects. Josephine Pollard’s book “Our Hero, General U.S. Grant” is a recounting of Grant’s life during the Civil War for the purpose of boys. It was written with a break down syllabically to help children gain an insight and imagination into the Civil War in hopes of encouraging ‘small boys to fear God – to do right, - to speak the truth, -to love peace, and to be brave and true through and through.’ Pollard includes Grant’s time:
