In 1779, General George Washington ordered a military campaigned against the Indian nations of Haudenosaunee – native tribes that had sided with the British in the American Revolution. This campaign was led by General John Sullivan who carried out a scorched earn regime that destroyed dozens of Iroquois villages in New York. The devastation was one of the most notable contributors to Native American hardships following the Revolutionary War.

The events of this campaign were written by Frederick Cook, who published a thorough account of the expedition. This first edition features folding maps, including those in an inner-cover pocket.
