1896 $5 MS65 PCGS. The 1896 half eagle is an underrated, largely unnoticed low-mintage issue of only 58,960 circulation strikes, but today few survive in Gem condition. The Panic of 1893 was partially responsible for the low mintage, along with the presidential election pitting Free Silver candidate William Jennings Bryan against the winner, William McKinley, who kept America on the gold standard. This superlative Gem boasts a full strike front and back, complementing primarily orange-gold surfaces with glints of lilac and excellent preservation. Population: 9 in 65 (2 in 65+), 1 finer (3/24).
