1897 1st ed Rudyard Kipling Captains Courageous New England FISHING Adventure

“The greatest sea novel of the 19th-century!”

“It does not matter what people think of a man after his death.”

― Rudyard Kipling, Captains Courageous

Appearing for the first time in “McClure’s Magazine”, Rudyard Kipling’s “Captains Courageous” was Kipling’s third attempt at writing a long story during his stay in the United States. According to Stewart, the text of the first book edition differs slightly from that of the regular [magazine] edition. This coming-of-age tale is the classic ‘fishing story’ off the coast of New England, near where Kipling was living at the time. The work contains “Something of his feelings about America - both his affection and his irritation” (Carpenter & Prichard, 296). It is also the only work of Kipling’s that is set entirely in America.

This first UK edition, first impression, followed the US edition by just one month. It is filled with 22 illustrations by I.W. Tabor.
