1899 Series "Indian Chief" $5 Silver Certificate
Currency

A highly collectible 1899 "Indian Chief" five dollar silver certificate, serial no. N40427278, classified by the signatures of Harvey Speelman and Frank White as Fr. 281. Measures 7.5" x 3". Featuring an engraved portrait of Lakota chief Running Antelope, this large, beautifully engraved bill stands out as the only piece of U.S. federal paper money to ever feature a named Native American as its central figure. Due to his being depicted in a war bonnet traditionally worn among the Pawnee, it continues to draw controversy among historians and collectors alike. Exhibits degrees of uneven toning and handling creases, with intermittent soiling throughout. Flattened folds; faint crease bisecting the center portrait. Else, very good. Encapsulated between two slabs of clear plastic to an overall size of 8.5" x 4.25".

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
