18TH C. QING FAMILLE ROSE "THE POTENTATE" BASIN
Chinese, circa 1735-1740. Large Qing dynasty famille rose export porcelain basin in "The Potentate" design after or influenced by Cornelis Pronk. The basin's decoration comprising of an overall diaper pattern over turquoise, lilac, light blue, and yellow with floral garland and shells accents, and two pairs of seated seated figures smoking long clay pipes. Unmarked. Note: In the collection of The British Museum, the Peabody Essex Museum, and National Museum of China for the Passion for Porcelain exhibition. Similar pieces and patterns sold from Christie's, Sotheby's and Bonhams. Provenance: Acquired from Christie's Chinese Export Art Auction, January 23, 2005, lot 235. Condition Report: Examined under blacklight. Stabilizing material added to foot with large chip. Scattered overpaint, small chips to glaze and a few to rim -- not distracting on rim. Glaze / enamel loss to interior. Stable condition.
