18th C. Chinese Carved Wooden Handle w/ Dragon

East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. An impressive hand-carved wooden handle with an openwork body. The handle is a simple rod shape that fits into the narrow mouth of the cylindrical socket shaped body. The openwork is an intricate affair; a long dragon twists around the cylinder from the narrow base to the broad top, and its head rests at the center in profile. Two robed male figures stand near the head, and two others stand below the top rim. Swirling cloud shapes fill the gaps between dragon’s body and men. These carvings are overlaid on lattice work that creates a supporting frame. The top rim flares slightly outward around a wide opening. This piece is an ornate handle and socket for attaching, perhaps to a parasol. The wood has developed a nice dark patina and traces of glimmering golden pigments remain, indicating this may have been brightly painted at one time. Size: 2.43" W x 15.25" H (6.2 cm x 38.7 cm)
