18th C. Chinese Steel Battle Axe w/ Halberd Head

[ translate ]

East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 18th century CE. A forged-steel battle axe formed from the top section of a traditional halberd. The slender body is surmounted by a spear head with slightly wavy edges as well as a laterally attached, crescent-shaped axe head. The stocky handle has thin leather wrappings over a layer of linen, and a pair of faceted counterweights secures the handle to the lengthy tang. Traditional Chinese halberds were used as military weapons from the early Shang Dynasty to the end of the Qing Dynasty, and axes like this example were created to not waste any usable parts from broken weaponry. Size: 27.6" L x 4.1" W (70.1 cm x 10.4 cm)

Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA, acquired in December 2006; ex-private Edmonds, Washington, USA collection

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.

#151904 Dimensions: Condition Report: Loosening to some leather handle wraps, with minor abrasions and pitting to body and blades, otherwise intact and very good. Nice patina throughout.
