18th C. Curtis Engraving Typha Major Flora Londinensis
Artist: Francis Sansom (British, active 1780-1815). Publisher: William Curtis (British, 1746-1799). "Typha Major" plate 62, volume 3 from "Flora Londinensis" ca. 1780. A wonderful copperplate engraving with hand coloring depicting Typha Major, also known as a Cattail by Francis Sansom, featured in English botanist William Curtis' "Flora Londinensis". Curtis created the London Botanic Garden in the 1770s and published "Flora Londinensis" in six volumes from 1777 until 1798. "Flora Londinensis" included beautiful engravings of plants as well as descriptions of how such plants grow wild in the environment of London, their regions of growth, time periods for flowering, and various names according to Carl Linnaeus and other authors. Size: 18.25" L x 10.75" W (46.4 cm x 27.3 cm)

Condition Report: Normal toning and a few areas of staining. Slight wrinkling and impressions of text from previous page of Flora Londinensis visible over section of the image. Minor losses and a few minute tears, one of which is secured with acid free tape on verso to peripheries of sheet that do not impact the image. Taped to matte, but could probably be carefully removed if desired. "Flora Londinensis" and "1780" handwritten in pencil on verso.
