[ translate ]

Europe, United Kingdom, ca. late 18th to early 19th century CE. A well preserved example of an iron spontoon made for the private militias raised in England to support the King against Napoleonic invasion. It features a flared base, a short blade, and a socket that attaches to a long wooden pole. A black cloth tassel hangs from below the guard, probably placed there in the Victorian period when it would have been displayed in the manor house of the family that had financially supported the militia. Size: 1.9" W x 73" H (4.8 cm x 185.4 cm)

Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA, acquired in May 2012; ex-Fagan Arms, Clinton Township, Michigan, USA

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.

#151961
Condition Report: Rich patina on blade; the blade's form is very well preserved. Pole may be a replacement but it has some wear commensurate with being quite old. The decorative tassel around its guard is probably Victorian.
