Note: Both copies have short titles boldly written in ink on the front covers with the name of the owner, Alex W. Longfellow. Alexander Wadsworth Longfellow (1814-1901), a native of Portland, Maine, was the brother of the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and a prominent civil engineer who supervised the building of the Boston and Maine Railroad and surveyed the US Northeastern boundary (1) Two 18th Century papers read before the English Royal Society on February 22, 1787, and bound together: (A) "Concerning the Latitude and Longitude of the Royal Observatory at Greenwich; with Remarks on a Memorial of the late M. Cassinio de Thury" by the Rev. Nevil Maskelyne; (B) "An Account of the Mode Proposed to be followed in determining the relative situation of the Royal Observatories of Greenwich and Paris" by Major-General William Roy Quarto, 1/4 leather with gilt title and raised ribs on spine
