18th C. German Necklaces Carnelian & Glass Trade Bead

[ translate ]

Western Europe, Germany, ca. 18th to 19th century CE; West Africa, ca. 19th century CE. This is a fine pair of necklaces with African glass trade beads and carnelian stones, all strung in modern times as wearable accessories. The 25 carnelians are cut and polished in Germany and were likely brought to Africa as trade beads, and all exhibit rectangular tube shapes with lustrous citrine hues and creamy white inclusions. The highly polished surfaces are quite smooth and tactile. Carnelian beads used in Africa usually came from Brazil or the German town of Idar-Oberstein, which was known as a gemstone center. The 25 glass beads are elongated with faceted sides; while used for trade and adornment in Africa, these beads likely originated in Europe, perhaps Germany. Both sets of beads are arranged on modern wires with a raffia fiber covering the terminal knot and are a great pair to wear separate or together! Size (glass strand doubled): 24" L (61 cm); (largest bead): 1" L x 0.2" W (2.5 cm x 0.5 cm); (carnelian necklace): 25" L (63.5 cm); (largest bead): 1" L x 0.5" W (2.5 cm x 1.3 cm)
