18th C. Indian Copper Kneeling Krishna
South Asia, India, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A solid cast copper alloy figure depicting Krishna the "Butter Thief" as a youth holding a ball of butter that he stole from his stepmother. Baby Krishna or Bala Krishna is crawling with a ball of butter in his right hand. As mischievous children/babies, Krishna and his older brother Balarama stole jars of butter and yogurt from their families and neighbors. Cast via the lost wax (cire perdue) process, this beautiful bronze figure presents a dynamic pose and wonderful detailed delineation of his crown and jewelry. A sweet Butter Thief Krisha bedecked with a beaded necklace, hoop earrings, bracelets, armlets, and anklets. Size: 2.3" L x 1.4" W x 2.625" H (5.8 cm x 3.6 cm x 6.7 cm)
