18th C. Japanese Polychrome Wood Buddhist Monk

East Asia, Japan, Edo to Meiji Period, ca. 18th to late 19th century CE. A fabulous hand-carved wood statue of a Buddhist monk sitting in lotus position atop a throne. Shown bald with a minimalistic visage, the monk is draped in long robes that cascade down his body, as he grasps a string of prayer beads known as ojuzu (or onenju) in his left hand and a small object in his right, which he holds to his chest. His lovely throne is of rectangular form and consists of a red pillow atop a pedestal, adorned in red, blue, caramel, gold, and black paints. Size: 1.5" L x 1.25" W x 2.125" H (3.8 cm x 3.2 cm x 5.4 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-private Kona, Hawaii, USA collection
