18th C. Spanish Steel Sword Clamshell Guard

Western Europe, Spain, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A fabulous forged steel sword with a clamshell shaped guard and a brass wire grip. The blade is relatively flat with a double edge, and the lower third of the blade contains three thin fuller grooves on both sides. A large downward clamshell guard protects the hand, and simple incised curvilinear motifs decorate the top and peripheries. A curving quillion and thin knuckle guard curve outward from under the hand guard. The grip is covered with a twisted brass wire and terminates at a round pommel. A dark patina covers the metal of the blade and guard. In addition, though difficult to discern, a mark is stamped on the tang under the clamshell guard. Size: 39.75" L x 5.5" W (101 cm x 14 cm)
