Northern Himalayas, Tibet, ca. 18th century CE. A finely cast bronze foo dog, also known as a kylin, with his head turned back 180 degrees and brandishing an open mouth full of fangs and sharp teeth. Foo dogs are intimidating, mythical leonine creatures seen in many forms of Asian art though best known as guardian statues that have protected imperial palaces, tombs, temples, and government offices since the time of China's Han dynasty. Foo dogs also symbolize prosperity and success, in addition to protective guardianship. Size: 2.45" W x 2.1" H (6.2 cm x 5.3 cm)
