18th or 19th Century Silver Multi Gemstone Seal of Solomon Star of David Breast Plate or Collar Butt

Title: 18th or 19th Century Silver Multi Gemstone Seal of Solomon Star of David Breast Plate or Collar Button

Description:The hexagram of this piece is adorned with seven gemstones; we believe these to be three garnets, one tourmaline, and two green glass stones –though with their archaic cuts and deep settings it is difficult to make ironclad determinations- that surround the large quartz centerpiece. The hexagram and floral detailing has been x-rayed and tested as silver, while the back of the piece is a large solid brass plate with wrought-iron hinges and rivets. Between the brass and silver there appears to be an inlay of wood covered in a linen-like cloth. A tremendous artifact that we belive dates to the 18th or 19th century, this Seal of Solomon may have adorned a breast plate or was worn as a collar button. The Seal of Solomon came to be seen as an amulet or talisman that encompassed wisdom, and was thought to influence power and charge the wearer with energy. Though a Seal of Solomon’s hexagram typically is interlaced rather than intersecting, as seen on this piece, the circular talismanic nature of this piece lends us to believe this is a Seal rather than a Star of David, though it is very possible it was intended as the latter.

Hallmarks or Signature: N/A

Condition of piece: Very good given age. All rivets are accounted for and secure, though one is missing the head of the rivet, but the hammered bottom and its shaft are in place and securely fixed. Some pitting on green-glass stones, expected wear to vermeil and brass backing.

Size: 4 inches in diameter. Approximately 1.5 inches deep from tip of quartz to back of iron hinge. The quartz measures approximately 31mm x 24mm x 10mm. The glass cabochons measure approximately 6mm x 5mm, the garnets measures approximately 8mm x 6mm and the tourmaline, which is the only cut stone besides the central quartz measures approximately 8mm x 7mm.

Material:Silver Vermeil, Wood, Brass, Iron, Multiple Gemstones, and possibly linen.
