1906 SPRINGFIELD EXPERIMENTAL US CAVALRY SWORD
This is an excellent example of the scarce experimental saber issued on a trial basis starting in 1905 and 1906. The Ordnance Department wanted a saber that was better adapted for the thrust than the cut and this has the regulation slightly curved blade, with long grip, pistol pommel, and solid guard. The metal pommel and guard are excellent, with no dents or bends. The grip retains its full, deep gray sharkskin wrap with good surface and color and its full triple-wire binding. The blade has its thick blade pad in place and is smooth, bright metal, showing just some scattered speckeling, but with excellent edge and point and crisp markings. The ricasso is stamped “U.S.” on the reverse and "SA". / [Ordnance Bomb] / 1906" at obverse. The leather cover of the scabbard shows age and scuffing but it is intact with wear to the tip. Excellent.
