1910s ANDO Arts & Crafts Japanese copper box TOY TIGER

[ translate ]

Early Showa period (1910s) Japanese mingei (Arts and Crafts) copper box with chased and enameled decoration of a toy tiger with nodding head hanging off a bamboo branch. Most probably the decoration represents some festival connected with children. Wonderful combination of uchidashi (hammered-out) and moriage (piled-up) techniques: metal was hammered out from the inside and raised surface was subsequently heavily enameled and fired. Crisp work with thickly laid enamel, beautifully applied multiple colors, wonderful textured surface of the box, perfectly riveted corners, excellent patina, in great condition. Four L-shaped feet on the bottom made out of paktong - an alloy of copper, nickel and zinc. Signed MIYAMOTO in oval reserve on the bottom, the artist definitely worked in the Ando Cloisonne Company workshop. Length 4 5/8 inches, width 3 3/4 inches.
