Rare and Fascinating Early French Cyclecar

In the early days of motoring, cyclecars were a popular choice in Europe due to their low cost and fuel efficiency. These vehicles were extremely light four-wheeled machines that used small motorcycle-type engines and the French-built Bedelia is noteworthy as one of the longest-lived and most famous of all cyclecar models. The first Bedelia was unusual because of its seating arrangement, which carried the passengers in tandem with the vehicle operated from the rear-seating position. Bedelias were built from 1910 to 1925 in Paris by Bourbeau & Devaux and initially powered by single-cylinder Aster engines. The company later installed their own V-twin engines, and in 1920, Bedelia sold their manufacturing rights to another firm, who adapted the model for traditional side-by-side seating.

The example offered here, a Type 8 10CV Sport Torpédo is one of the early tandem Bedelias, similar in style to the factory-campaigned example that won the 1913 Cyclecar Grand Prix, beating its archrival manufacturer, Morgan. This Bedelia displays a lovely patina and would be an outstanding conversation piece, sure to impress even the most knowledgeable French car enthusiast.
