1914 EUGENICS Nature’s Secrets Revealed Nazi Philosophy
1914 EUGENICS Nature’s Secrets Revealed Nazi Philosophy Genetics Heredity Ethics
Beginning in 1883 with Francis Galton’s definition, Eugenics has been a source of controversy for scientists and philosophers. While the concept of ‘improving human genetic quality’ has always been important, it developed more of a negative connotation with Nazi Germany and the Holocaust when many of the Nuremberg Trials defendants sought to justify their abusive tactics as eugenics.
During this time, books on eugenics saw a significant stopping of the presses. Books such as Shannon’s ‘Nature’s Secrets Revealed’ were halted, even though they were written to guide and advise the public to maintain a sense of social purity. (Aultman).
While this work was billed as a medical book, it includes sections on more than just the physical and anatomical side of humanity. Shannon covers a variety of topics including emotional love, courtship and dating, ethics of unmarried individuals, marital consummation, pregnancy, child-rearing, chastity, puberty, sexually transmitted diseases, and social interaction.
