Written in 1881 by Stedman, a prominent New York physician with no apparent Chinese ties, and Lee, a Chinese-American Yale graduate working as interpreter at the Chinese Embassy in Washington.
This book went through several reprintings. The one that matches the pagination of this copy was printed in Shanghai in 1916, though, despite having no colophon, it was clearly issued by a New York publisher of foreign language texts whose ads fill the first two dozen pages of the book. From the various sample dialogues offered, it was apparently intended for use by an well-educated Chinese- American immigrants.
