1916-S $10

[ translate ]

1916-S $10 MS62 PCGS. CAC. Between 1915 and 1926, only the San Francisco Mint struck ten dollar gold pieces, and that facility produced the denomination in only two years: 1916 and 1920. Both of these issues boast relatively low mintages, although the 1916-S (138,500 coins struck) survives in much greater numbers than the 1920-S, which is a series key. The 1916-S is indeed elusive in the context of the series, but low-end Mint State coins can still be acquired with patience. However, CAC-endorsed coins are rare. This CAC example displays a sharp strike and vibrant straw-gold luster, with scattered abrasions as expected for the grade. CAC: 17 in 62, 19 finer (3/24).
