1920s Acoma Polychrome Olla w/ Rain Parrots

Native American, Southwestern United States, Acoma Pueblo, ca. early 20th century Ce. A hand-built pottery olla jar of classic form with a concave foot, a broad, apple-shaped body, a sloped shoulder, and a thick rim surrounding the deep basin. The surface is slipped in a creamy white and painted with black and umber-brown geometric motifs with birds - a popular motif known as rain parrots. The rain parrots perch on the stems of flowering plants, a symbol of water and life - appropriate for olla water carrying jugs. Size: 11.5" Diameter x 9.75" H (29.2 cm x 24.8 cm)
