1920s French Gilt Wood Wall Clock - Duverdrey & Bloquel
Western Europe, France, ca. 1920s CE. A gorgeous 11 jewels wall clock with a Baroque or Rococo style gilt wood frame. The wood is carved to replicate cloth drapery, with roses and foliate designs around the clock face. The dial face is marked with "France" on the bottom edge. The back of the clock has a brass lid, that opens to reveal the winding mechanism, and the maker mark "DUVERDREY & BLOQUEL / FRANCE / 11 ELEVEN JEWELS" with a lion emblem. The jewels are indeed precious stones, usually diamonds, that are used as bearings to facilitate smooth movements with gears. A beautiful addition for any room! Size: 25.5" L x 6.5" W (64.8 cm x 16.5 cm)
The maker marks and emblem on the clock help narrow down the manufacture date. Originally they operated under the name Albert Villon, Duverdrey et Bloquel, until Albert Villon's death in 1902, when Duverdrey & Bloquel rebranded and dropped Villon's name, to simply "Duverdrey & Bloquel." In 1928 they added "Bayard" to their tradename.

Condition Report: Clock winds but does not work. Stable fissures to wood, visible on verso. Upper corner of roses reattached with adhesive. Lower corner of roses is slightly loose. Chips to gilt. Nice patina. Elongated wooden loops are stable for hanging.
