1924 COMMERCIAL MAUSER TYPE M/MS STUTZEN RIFLE 6.8
SERIAL NUMBER: 90020. BARREL: 20 ½". CALIBER: 6.5×58mm Portuguese Vergueiro (Marked: PORT 6.5N). MANUFACTURED: 1924. This premium European hunting rifle is a factory-original commercial Mauser Type "M" or "MS" Stutzen (Mannlicher-style) sporting rifle. It was manufactured at the legendary Mauser factory in Oberndorf am Neckar, Germany, in 1924, bearing the serial number 90020. This specific piece represents a highly collectible post-WWI "transitional" build. While Mauser officially changed its corporate name to Mauser-Werke AG in 1922, the left side of this receiver features the earlier, crisp pre-war rolling text: "WAFFENFABRIK MAUSER-OBERNDORF A/N". To fulfill a luxury custom order during the Weimar Republic era, Mauser gunsmiths pulled a completed, premium-grade pre-war action from their existing parts inventory and numbered it sequentially into the 1924 commercial serial range. The rifle is chambered in the highly specialized, flat-shooting 6.5×58mm Portuguese Vergueiro cartridge, denoted by the barrel marking "PORT 6.5N". The "N" signifies a normalized, standard factory chambering profile. The barrel and action are stamped with traditional German commercial proof marks that confirm its authenticity and stringent factory testing. The Crown over "B" indicates a definitive proof firing with high-pressure loads in its fully finished, assembled state, while the Crown over "U" (Untersuchung) serves as the final inspection check. The additional markings-a "U" under a star and the letters "PP"-represent specialized Oberndorf factory inspector initials and sub-contractor shop codes unique to custom-ordered firearms of this era.True to its European stalking heritage, the firearm features a full-length Mannlicher-style stock crafted from select walnut, running continuously down the underside of the barrel to a metal muzzle cap. It is equipped with a premium factory double-set trigger system designed for extreme field precision. Pulling the rear trigger "sets" the mechanism, reducing the front trigger to a hair-trigger requiring only ounces of pressure to break cleanly. If the rear trigger is left uncocked, the front trigger operates as a standard, heavier hunting trigger, offering the shooter maximum flexibility in the field. The top flats of the receiver feature integrated, hand-checkered Suhl Quick-Detachable Claw Mount bases (Suhler Einhakmontage), each detailed with two distinct rectangular locking slots. This master-crafted, anti-glare system allowed a hunter to instantly remove a high-end German optic to use the iron sights, then snap it back on while maintaining a perfect return-to-zero. To accommodate this elite, low-mounted factory optic system, the original flat, spoon-shaped (butter-knife) bolt handle was custom-altered. A half-round metal section was precisely blended onto the blade, giving the handle the necessary downward clearance to sweep under a scope bell while elegantly preserving its classic European profile.CONDITION: Good. The bore is shiny with crisp rifling. The wood stock shows its character with handling / storage wear. The stock storage door is not held tightly to stock-a little loose. The action is tight and operates normally. C&R 25-1036
