The 1924-S Saint-Gaudens double eagle was considered a great rarity in the series in the 1940s, when collecting large denomination gold coins first became popular in this country. Fortunately for collectors, a number of coins have been repatriated from foreign holdings since then, but the issue is still scarce in all grades today. This attractive Select specimen exhibits well-detailed design elements, with just a touch of softness on the eagle's belly.
