Built from 1924 through 1928, the Morgan-Monotrace filled a perceived niche in the market between a sidecar motorcycle and an automobile. The original design was created by Mauser in Germany but licensed for production by Monotrace in St. Etienne, France. Its nickname, the “single track motorcar,” hints at its purpose as its two-wheeled design allowed it to navigate narrow tracks and paths that were impassable by automobiles or even sidecar combinations. A single-cylinder water-cooled engine mounted under the passenger’s seat powered the Monotrace. A pair of lever-controlled balance wheels provided support to the rider, especially when stopped.

The early history of this Monotrace is not known, but it was stored in Malmerspach, France, in the Schlumpf Reserve Collection for many years prior to the Mullin Collection’s acquisition in 2008. As one of very few examples believed to exist, a Morgan-Montrace is unlikely to come to auction again any time soon, if at all.
