1927 Ford Model T Custom Roadster
Greening Auto Company is one of the most accomplished shops in hot rodding. Jeff and Jesse Greening founded it as a father-and-son business in 1999 and won the Don Ridler Award at the Detroit Autorama with their very first project in 2000, then won it again in 2012. Most of the shop's cars are built for customers, but this 1927 Ford roadster, which Jesse calls the XL27, he built for himself. It starts with an all-steel XL27 body from Shadow Rods of Saginaw, Michigan, a slightly enlarged version of the '27 T, on Shadow Rods 1932-style X-member frame rails. Jesse's goal was a car that looks traditional but is made with modern materials and methods, including 3D-printed metal parts and the shop's own machine work. The finished car was a Top 5 finalist for Goodguys Street Rod of the Year in 2015 and was featured in Street Rodder. It also proved itself on the road with a 450-mile drive from Sedona, Arizona, to Pomona, California, for the L.A. Roadster Show.
The front suspension shows the thinking behind the whole car. A dropped I-beam axle and custom split wishbones give it a vintage look, while RideTech coilovers mounted sideways in a cantilever layout handle the springing. A modified Greening Sweet Rack does the steering. In back, Shadow Rods ladder bars locate a Winters quick-change rear end with 3.63 gears and Moser axles. Twelve-inch Baer disc brakes sit at all four corners with Greening-logo calipers, and separate Wilwood master cylinders operate them. The car's carbon-fiber brake vents also hold one-off LED daytime running lights. Greening designed and machined the five-spoke knock-off wheels in-house, 16x3 in front and 18x5 in back. They're finished in brushed nickel under translucent black powder coat and wear Firestone bias-ply tires. Power comes from a 5.3-liter GM LS V-8 fed by Inglese eight-stack fuel injection, with custom-machined valve covers and a custom exhaust, backed by a Bowler T5 five-speed manual.
The body wears an aluminum hood that's hinged on the passenger side and held down with leather straps. Greening painted the car in-house in Ferrari White using Glasurit 90 paint. The windshield posts and mirrors are carbon fiber, and the car has custom vent windows and an aircraft-style fuel cap. The Hella HID projector headlights sit in housings machined in-house, with 3D-printed lenses and turn signals, and the taillights were machined in-house too. A chopped, canvas-covered aluminum Carson-style top with a Sid Chavers pivoting rear window completes the profile. Inside, M&M Hot Rod Interiors covered the custom bomber-style seats in "Work Boot Brown" leather over wool carpet. A fabricated console holds the stereo and turn-signal controls. The Classic Instruments gauges have carbon-fiber faces and machined trim rings and sit beside a one-off machined Greening steering wheel. The pedals are 3D-printed steel, and heat comes from a vintage Tropic Aire heater. The steering wheel, shifter and door handles are wrapped in heavy twine. MILEAGE: 4264. VIN: 27FD10671.
