ITEM DESCRIPTION

Up for auction is a magnificent, historically significant vintage composition character doll from the celebrated "American Children" series, manufactured by the Effanbee Doll Company between 1936 and 1939. This groundbreaking series was sculpted directly by legendary doll artisan Dewees Cochran, representing the historic first time a major American commercial manufacturer partnered with an independent studio artist to bring lifelike childhood realism and genuine anatomical fidelity to the broader public market.

The doll is built on a beautifully proportioned five-piece jointed child body format. The character face is instantly recognizable by its lifelike childhood anatomy, featuring realistic facial curves, hand-set glass sleep eyes carrying real hair upper eyelashes, painted lower lashes, a softly blushed complexion, and an open/closed mouth revealing a delicate row of tiny modeled upper teeth. This premium larger-scale format showcases Cochran's signature expressive hands, beautifully molded with distinct, individual finger separations. She features a glorious, full golden-blonde human hair wig styled past her shoulders into a single traditional long braid down her rear spine.

She arrives wonderfully dressed in a charming, period-correct European provincial or alpine regional outfit layout. The multi-piece ensemble consists of a crisp white sheer crinkle-fabric under-blouse featuring a ruffled collar and puffed elbow-length sleeves. Layered over the blouse is a rich teal blue linen-textured dirndl jumper dress, beautifully tailored with parallel shoulder straps anchored by white buttons, a criss-cross white cord corset-lace chest piece, and a built-in white pleated vertical-striped apron that ties into an elegant bow at the rear spine. Her look is completed with white knit ankle socks, white faux-leather side-tie oxford oxfords with central eyelet laces, and a dark finished metal display stand.

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF EFFANBEE'S AMERICAN CHILDREN SERIES

Prior to 1936, commercial composition playthings were heavily dominated by idealized, vacant doll-faced expressions or standard novelty baby models. Effanbee revolutionized the industry by commissioning fine artist Dewees Cochran to design a series of six realistic faces based on actual children she encountered in her independent portrait workshops. This line, marketed proudly as the "American Children," broke new ground by celebrating anatomical realism and thoughtful child personalities. Because these complex molds were expensive to release and competed against lower-cost play dolls during the late Depression era, their production run was short-lived, ensuring their status today as scarce, foundational treasures of mid-century American toy design.

NOTE FOR BIDDERS

This historic estate lot features the large composition Effanbee doll, her complete alpine dirndl lace-up dress layout, full footwear coordinates, and the dark finished display stand exactly as shown in the catalog photographs. Please closely inspect all provided high-resolution macro imagery to appreciate the incredible sculpting lines, hand-painted facial features, intact braided hairstyle, and phenomenal historical lineage of this Dewees Cochran classic.

Condition
Small hairline crack near left eye, minimal vertical cracking on legs. Overall very nice. As pictured. Absence of specific condition description does not denote there is no damage, especially when considering a vintage or antique doll. Please read description carefully and ask questions before bidding. Dolls are available to preview in person. Call or email for preview details. I do my best to point out the major damage but this condition report is not exhaustive and other minor flaws may be found.
