Item Description
Up for auction is a magnificent, historically significant 15-inch vintage composition character doll from the celebrated "American Children" series, manufactured by the Effanbee Doll Company between 1936 and 1939. This groundbreaking series was sculpted directly by legendary doll artisan Dewees Cochran, representing the historic first time a major American commercial manufacturer partnered with an independent studio artist to bring lifelike childhood realism to the broader public market.
Standing 15 inches tall, the doll is constructed from solid all-composition material configured on a beautifully proportioned five-piece jointed child body. The character face is instantly recognizable by its lifelike childhood anatomy, featuring realistic facial curves, a beautifully modeled nose, side-glancing eyes with fine painted lower lashes, a delicately blushed complexion, and an open/closed mouth showing a row of tiny modeled upper teeth. She features her original, full golden-blonde human hair wig styled beneath a wide-brimmed woven straw summer sun bonnet accented with a bright yellow silk ribbon bow ties.
She arrives wonderfully dressed in a charming, period-correct Americana summer outfit layout. The ensemble consists of a yellow-and-white gingham check wrap-style dress beautifully embellished with parallel bands of cream-and-red braided looping ribbon trim along the bodice overlap and skirt hemline. Her outfit is completed with custom white knit ankle socks, glossy black strap dress shoes carrying decorative brass button accents, and a white metal display stand.
The Significance of Effanbee's American Children Series
Prior to 1936, commercial composition playthings were heavily dominated by idealized, doll-faced expressions or standard novelty baby models. Effanbee revolutionized the industry by commissioning fine artist Dewees Cochran to design a series of six realistic faces based on actual children she encountered in her independent portrait workshops. This line, marketed proudly as the "American Children," broke new ground by celebrating anatomical realism and thoughtful child personalities. Because these complex molds were expensive to release and competed against lower-cost play dolls during the late Depression era, their production run was short-lived, ensuring their status today as scarce, foundational treasures of mid-century American toy design.
Collector's Note: This historic lot features the 15" Effanbee composition doll, her complete yellow gingham wrap dress, straw sun hat, and the white metal display stand exactly as shown in the catalog photographs. Please review all high-resolution macro imagery to appreciate the incredible sculpting lines, hand-painted details, and phenomenal historical lineage of this Dewees Cochran classic.
Condition
Sleepy eyes work well, crazing cracks to face, legs and body. Overall nice. See photos. Absence of specific condition description does not denote there is no damage, especially when considering a vintage or antique doll. Please read description carefully and ask questions before bidding. Dolls are available to preview in person. Call or email for preview details. I do my best to point out the major damage but this condition report is not exhaustive and other minor flaws may be found.
