ITEM DESCRIPTION

Up for auction is a lovely, highly expressive 18-inch vintage composition child doll, beautifully manufactured by an anonymous pre-war American toy firm circa the mid-to-late 1930s. Designed to mirror the iconic, chubby-cheeked toddler face shapes made popular during the golden age of composition manufacturing, this substantial unmarked figure serves as an excellent, deeply nostalgic display canvas displaying an eye-catching, mod-inspired retro style.

Standing an impressive 18 inches tall, the doll features a wonderfully round, dimpled face sculpt. Her expressive features are highlighted by delicately arched painted brows, softly blushed cheeks, and a bright crimson-red pouty mouth treatment. Her amber-brown glass sleep eyes remain operational with intact weighted movement mechanisms and are framed by fine painted upper eyelashes. She features a full honey-blonde mohair wig, styled in a thick halo of loose, rolling finger waves framing her face and crown.

The doll comes beautifully styled in an eye-catching, mid-century retro coordinate outfit. The two-piece ensemble is tailored from a rich chocolate-brown fabric adorned with a repeating retro geometric floral print in striking shades of yellow, white, and sage green. The long-sleeved jacket features a neat fold-over Peter Pan collar and an integrated breast pocket accented with a stylized yellow felt pocket square insert. The jacket transitions into a matching short A-line skirt panel. Beneath the outerwear, she wears a pair of newer white mesh knit undergarment bloomers finished with a delicate white lace scalloped border trim and carrying a printed "Made in Hong Kong" label. Completing her charming look is a set of white knit trim socks paired with excellent black patent leather side-strap shoes carrying dual teardrop toe cutouts and gold buckle accents.

MANUFACTURER HISTORY

During the 1930s and 1940s, the American toy landscape was filled with a vast network of competing doll foundries operating out of the greater New York and New England areas. While major design firms like Ideal, Effanbee, and American Character prominently branded their creations, many department store distribution houses contracted these same foundries to produce unmarked "house brand" dolls to offer families more affordable purchasing tiers during the height of the Great Depression. Unmarked composition survivors are highly valued today for their incredible historical utility, allowing collectors to appreciate authentic pre-war sculpting methods, weighted eye mechanisms, and mohair wig applications independent of corporate brand premiums.

AUTHENTICITY LABEL PROVENANCE

While the underlying pre-war composition head and body framework remain completely clean and unmarked, providing an unbranded aesthetic for brand-neutral antique purists, the interior seam of her white mesh undergarment bloomers retains an authentic fabric manufacturing label reading in clear red block lettering: "MADE IN HONG KONG". This interior label identifies the undergarments as a high-quality, later-period vintage replacement set, expertly selected to complement the doll's retro-revival wardrobe theme.

NOTE FOR BIDDERS

This beautiful, large-scale estate lot features the 18" composition toddler doll, her complete two-piece brown floral print jacket and skirt coordinates, her lace-trimmed replacement bloomers, white knit socks, black patent dress shoes, and the white enameled circular display stand exactly as presented in the catalog images. This piece is offered loose without its original 1930s cardboard retail packaging. Bidders are encouraged to closely examine all high-resolution macro imagery to fully appreciate the classic hand-painted facial features, secure mohair setting, operational sleep eyes, and captivating historical display presence of this pre-war American classic.

Condition
No box. Very light cracking to face. Overall nice. See photos. This is an old doll and may show signs of wear consistent with age. Absence of specific condition description does not denote there is no damage, especially when considering a vintage or antique doll. Please read description carefully and ask questions before bidding. Dolls are available to preview in person. Call or email for preview details. I do my best to point out the major damage but this condition report is not exhaustive and other minor flaws may be found.
