THE BUICK MODEL 31

Buick produced a broad range of passenger cars in 1931: The four largest featured straight-eight overhead-valve engines, but displacement and output varied. The Series 50 gave 77hp from 220 cubic inches; the 60 with 272ci gave 90 horsepower, and the 80 and long-wheelbase 90, both with 344ci, developed 104hp. The Series 50 was built on a 114-inch wheelbase, the same as the discontinued Marquette. Despite being a lower-mid-priced automobile, the Buick series 50 gave owners a fully synchronized transmission, quite unusual for less-expensive cars. It was well-finished and gave good performance, while its four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes helped bring thing to a sure-footed halt when necessary. Interiors were either cloth of Mohair, and there was a foot rail for the rear-seat passengers while the driver's seat was adjustable, still a fairly new convenience. The Model 57 5-passenger, 4-door sedan was quite popular, with a reported 33,184 sold in 1931.

THE MOTOCAR OFFERED

Here is a very attractive, fully restored Buick, with rear-hinged back doors, very nice paintwork in dark blue with black fenders and lots of bright metal trim. Its body number is shown to be 2142 with paint code 8021, per its data plate. It has a visored windshield, running boards with step-plates, and twin side-mount spares secured with leather straps and topped with twin rear-view mirrors. There is a large rack-mounted trunk at the rear of the car, body color.

Inside the cabin, the deeply-pleated front and rear seats are covered in blue-gray cloth and there is tastefully polished wood trim on the door caps, dashboard, and elsewhere along with a footrest for the rear seat passengers. The painted wire wheels are fitted with 5.25/5.50 x 18 whitewall tires. The engine compartment is very clean and presentable. While the odometer indicates 22,652 miles, the total mileage is unknown. The handsome radiator shell is topped with a "Buick 8" emblem, and the name "Buick" appears on the front of the shuttered grille. This is a very-well-turned-out nice automobile suitable for touring and club-level shows.
