1942/1-D 10C FS-101, FB

1942/1-D 10C FS-101 MS66 Full Bands PCGS. CAC. The overdates struck in 1942 at the Philadelphia and Denver mints are the chief Guide Book varieties within the Mercury dime series. Between the two issues, the 1942/1 Philadelphia coin is more plentiful certified and attributed, but most Mint State examples lack Full Bands definition, so collectors seeking Full Bands pieces have a challenge. The 1942/1-D counterpart -- represented by the current coin -- is scarcer overall, but the majority of the Mint State survivors display Full Bands definition. That Full Bands population thins out considerably in Gem and better grades, and in MS66 Full Bands, the Denver overdate is a notable rarity, with only a single numerically finer coin at PCGS (3/24). The present CAC-endorsed coin displays brilliant, glistening mint luster throughout clean fields and boldly defined central motifs. The bands sharpness is pleasing. Advanced Registry collectors will be hard-pressed to locate a finer example of this variety. Population (FS-101): 18 in 66 (4 in 66+) Full Bands, 1 finer. CAC: 8 in 66, 0 finer (3/24).
