Dans les années 1950, le fondateur d'Airstream, Wally Byam, a emmené ses compagnons d'aventure en caravane Airstream Globe-Trotter autour du monde. Longue de 22 pieds, elle "pouvait aller partout où une automobile peut aller tout en disposant de toutes les installations nécessaires à une vie confortable", ainsi que le l'indiquait sa description publicitaire.
L'exemplaire présenté ferait partie d'une série limitée à 7 exemplaires qui se distingue de la Globe-Trotter classique par ses trois vitres avant et arrière avec moustiquaire, en lieu et place de baies vitrées. Ce détail renforce l'allure aéronautique de l'ensemble. Il a rejoint la collection du célèbre peintre officiel des 24 Heures du Mans, François Bruère, il y'a une dizaine d'années. Ce dernier la tractait derrière sa Cadillac et en garde un souvenir ému après l'avoir cédé en 2020. Son précédent propriétaire luxembourgeois lui avait indiqué l'avoir acheté à un ancien acteur hollywoodien qui s'en servait le week-end dans le désert californien. En parfait état, la carrosserie a été entièrement polie et les joints changés. Le plancher a été refait, l'intérieur restauré en conservant tout le mobilier d'époque, ainsi que les appliques lumineuses, à l'exception du réfrigérateur. Le four semble neuf d'époque. La banquette en fer à cheval est convertible en grand lit et le salon avant est amovible afin d'être placé à l'extérieur. L'éclairage fonctionne soit sur batterie, soit sur secteur (220v) et les prises américaines ont été conservées. Les bouteilles de gaz, américaines également, sont factices. Posséder une Airstream est un rêve en soi, mais devenir le propriétaire d'un exemplaire rarissime, de la première génération, en parfait état et à taille humaine relève de la gageure ! Cette opportunité ne se représentera pas !

In the 1950s, Airstream founder Wally Byam took his fellow adventurers on an Airstream Globe-Trotter caravan around the world. 22 feet long, the caravan "could go anywhere an automobile can go while having all the facilities necessary for a comfortable life," as the advertising said.
The one we are offering is a part of a limited series of 7 units which differs from the classic Globe-Trotter by its three front and rear windows with mosquito nets, instead of bay windows. This detail reinforces the aeronautical look of the caravan. It became a part of the collection of the famous official painter of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, François Bruère, about ten years ago. The latter towed it behind his Cadillac and has fond memories of it after selling it in 2020. Its previous Luxembourg-based owner had told him that he had bought it from a former Hollywood actor who used it on weekends in the Californian desert. In perfect condition, the bodywork has been fully polished, and the seals changed. The floor has been redone, the interior restored while retaining all the period furniture, as well as the light fittings, with the exception of the refrigerator. The oven looks brand new. The horseshoe bench seat is convertible into a double bed and the front lounge is removable to be placed outside. The lighting works either on battery or on mains (220v) and the American sockets have been retained. The gas cylinders, also American, are fake. Owning an Airstream is a dream in itself but becoming the owner of an extremely rare first-generation example, in perfect condition and on a human scale, is a challenge! This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!
