1950 Kindig-It VW Hebmuller Cabriolet
No Reserve. Few air-cooled Volkswagens possess the mystique of the coachbuilt Type 14A Hebmuller, and even fewer combine that extraordinary pedigree with the craftsmanship and international recognition of Dave Kindig and Kindig-It Design. Commissioned by Volkswagen as an elegant 2+2 companion to the Type 1, only 696 Hebmuller Cabriolets were ultimately produced after a devastating 1949 factory fire interrupted an intended 2,000-car production run. This genuine example is recognized by the Hebmuller Registry as chassis 1-0148550, a 1950 Type 14A delivered to Autohaus Schultz in Essen, Germany, on March 22, 1950. Decades later, David and Tracey Maxwell commissioned Kindig-It Design to create what Dave Kindig considered the ultimate Volkswagen convertible. A lifelong air-cooled Volkswagen enthusiast who had dreamed of building a hot-rodded Hebmuller since his youth, Kindig approached the exceptionally rare project with an emphasis on preserving its unmistakable coachbuilt identity while transforming its performance, drivability and finish.
The body was completely stripped, revealing extensive earlier restoration work and historic accident repairs that required Kindig's craftsmen to reconstruct sheetmetal-including approximately the forward 10 inches of the hood-and restore numerous early Volkswagen details. Importantly, rather than sacrifice the car's original Volkswagen chassis for the modified drivetrain, Kindig-It restored and preserved the original pan and utilized a separate 1970 IRS chassis for the resto-mod configuration. A highly developed 2,276cc air-cooled flat-four producing approximately 176 horsepower incorporates an aluminum Super Case, CB Performance 82mm crank and CNC Wedge Port heads, an Engle FK-8 camshaft and dual Weber 48 IDA carburetors, with power delivered through a specially adapted 1987 Volkswagen Vanagon automatic transaxle. Airkewld suspension components, Penske rear coilovers, four-wheel disc brakes with Wilwood calipers and one-off EVOD wheels designed by Dave Kindig complete a chassis engineered to make this nearly unobtainable Volkswagen as enjoyable to drive as it is remarkable to behold.
Finished in Kindig's Modern Classikk Bad Blood Red and Black Hole Black, a modern interpretation of the traditional black-and-red scheme recorded for this very chassis by the Hebmuller Registry, the car retains the restrained elegance that has made the Type 14A one of the world's most coveted Volkswagens. Hand-fabricated and triple-chrome-plated beltline trim complements a Sewfine interior utilizing original seat frames, Fog leather, German square-weave carpeting, a restored Petri Banjo steering wheel and vintage details discreetly integrated with Dakota Digital HDX instrumentation and modern audio. The entire transformation was documented across the first two episodes of Season 8 of MotorTrend's Bitchin' Rides, followed by an appearance at the 2021 SEMA Show and a cover feature with Dave Kindig in the February 2022 issue of Hot VWs, while published ISCA Detroit results record a first-place Mild Compact Custom award. Combining one of Volkswagen's rarest coachbuilt automobiles with the vision of one of America's foremost contemporary custom-car builders, this Kindig-built Hebmuller occupies a unique position at the intersection of important Volkswagen history and modern American coachbuilding. VIN: 148550.
